International Day in International Schools

Also this year the Pleasure/Nightmare of every International student's mom is gone (at least in Suzhou).
That Nightmare/Pleasure is: "International Day".
A non expat will ask for sure: "what is International Day?"
(Called "Founder's Day" at my kids' Dulwich International School)

Tutto ciò viene gestito e preparato dai genitori.
I genitori svedesi pensano alla bancarella svedese, i coreani a quella coreana, ecc.

Well, it's a day where school is open to everyone and where there are booths from all the different countries the students come from. Everything is prepared by the parents. For instance, Swedish parents set up the Sweden booth, Korean parents are in charge of the Korean booth, etc.

Visitors are surrounded by a multitude of colours, different tastes and scents.
A joy for the eyes and an unforgettable experience.

But you can easily guess the delirium behind the organisation: the meetings, emails, the coordination between school and parents.
No money but Tickets (1 ticket = 5 ¥) and every amount earned is for projects related to charity.

In the Italian parents group I saw working together during these seven International Days in two different schools "I saw things that you humans" cannot even imagine.

People fighting about the right ticket price of a piece of cake; mothers unfriending other mothers on Facebook because of this day; women getting up at 5 am to set up everything properly; obsessed people going out of their mind because the booth decorations were not symmetrical.  I saw husbands who were sent home twice or three times because a flag was forgotten or a portion of pasta was still in the house fridge. I saw people becoming completely horrified because one of the volunteers, after working for four consecutive hours, was eating a piece of lasagna without paying the right tickets.
I saw a thousand meetings being set up where leaders and lambs were participating .

Ho visto collaborazione, sorrisi e soprattutto tanto, tanto orgoglio.

However, I saw lot of people become friends after this experience together.
I saw daddies cooking perfect pastries, others levelling a "piadina" with a perfect "romagnolo" smile in their faces. I saw moms taking care of every details with the same love they put in for their families. I saw Italians donate lasagna to the French and the French donate croissants to Italians.
I saw hugs, Italian people dressed up in the same way without the excuse of football.
I saw collaboration, smiles and a lot of pride.

Pride to show the world, the joy and the products of their Land. The goodness of a handmade lasagna, a glass of wine chosen well, a piece of pizza warmed at the right temperature, a good coffee.
Ogni anno però mi dimentico di mettere un cartello che parli delle cose che, oltre all'arte, all'archeologia, al cibo, alla musica classica, all'opera, al vino, alla moda, alle automobili, personalmente mi rendono orgogliosa di essere italiana:
1) Le nostre scuole sono pubbliche e belle e ogni bambino ha diritto di imparare senza pagare;
2) I nostri ospedali sono pubblici e tutti hanno il diritto di farsi curare. Nessun dottore prima di salvarti la vita si informa sul fatto che il malato abbia o meno un'assicurazione (come accade nella maggior parte degli altri Paesi);

Every year I am forgetting to set up a poster that is not talking about art or archaeology, food or wine, or Italian Classic Music, or Opera, or Italian fashion or Italian cars. I want to write about what is making me so terribly proud to be Italian:
1) our schools are wonderful and public; every child has the right to learn for free.
2) Our hospitals are public and everybody has the right to be nursed. No doctor in Italy will ask you about your insurance before saving your life (and also after). It's not like that in the majority part of other Countries.
3) Children, women and men who are sailing in the Mediterranean Sea aboard of crumbling boats are carried and taken in safe. Here there is no logic of "I let you die so next times nobody will arrive". Life has value for us.
